Loose diamonds GIA/IGI certified are graded using strict standards that are consistent amongst their laboratories.
Each diamond is carefully evaluated by at least four expert gemmologists who are chosen at random to guarantee
an unbiased evaluation. The EGL's grading standards are more lenient and as a general rule, an EGL
certified diamond will compare equally in quality to a GIA/IGI certified diamond that is graded one colour
and clarity grade lower. For example, an EGL diamond graded F in colour and VS2 in clarity is comparable to
a GIA/IGI diamond graded G in colour and SI1 in clarity. As a result, GIA/IGI certified diamonds are
considered more valuable.
However, there is a benefit to choosing an EGL certified diamond. Due to the difference in the grading
standards used, an EGL diamond graded the same colour and clarity as a GIA/IGI diamond will be less expensive.
This is seen as an advantage to those who consider the ratings stated on the certificate a priority when choosing
their diamond.
Important note - we strongly recommend that you do not buy a diamond that has been gradedin-house, ie a diamond that has been graded by the company that is selling it, this is because it is not an independent, unbiased opinion. There will always be a reason if a like for like carat, colour, clarity diamond is much cheaper than 365 Diamond - simple answer the same diamond would not achieve the same colour and clarity grades if certificated by an independant laboratory, they would be lower! 365 Diamond do not recommend that you buy a diamond that has strong or medium fluorescence, they are cheaper diamonds and exhibit haziness or milkiness in natural light. Warning information you need to know before buying a diamond ring on-line:
We strongly recommend that you DO NOT buy diamond rings from online jewellers/manufacturers who supply ‘in-house’ diamond grading certificates, ie diamonds that they have graded themselves.
This is a bit like buying a house without the title deeds!
You should only buy a diamond, if certified, when it comes with a diamond grading certificate from an independent, unbiased, certified laboratory, (such as GIA, IGI, HRD or EGL) who do not sell diamonds and are not connected to any diamond suppliers or manufacturers Without an independent certificate you are left to trust the jeweller’s estimate, which could be subjective or even misleading.
This is why some online diamonds appear surprisingly cheap. The jewellers/suppliers, who provide ‘in-house’ diamond grading certificates, do not pay the £100 independent certification fee, which virtually all quality diamonds must have.
More importantly, you do not want your fiancé or partner getting a nasty shock when he/she decides to get your diamond ring valued at the local jeweller’s only to discover that the diamond is nowhere near as valuable, or as good quality, as she (and you) had thought!
The only way to avoid this scenario is to make sure your diamond is independently certified, which means you can be 100% sure of its excellence and value.
What is a certificate?
A diamond certificate is a report prepared by a team of gemologists. The diamond is evaluated, measured and scrutinized by trained eyes in laboratory conditions. A diamond grading certificate includes an analysis of the diamond’s dimensions, clarity, colour, polish, symmetry and other characteristics.
